Frequently Asked Questions

Are Classes Open To Viewing?

Classes are closed sessions. This provides students with the necessary focus and lack of distraction required to support an optimal learning environment. However, the community is invited to attend our open houses offered twice-a-year as an opportunity to get an up-close view of what we do.

YLJC ensembles perform regularly at various locations in San Diego. See our calender for all dates.

Where Do Ensembles Play?

YLJC provides public performance opportunities for each ensemble, with some performing at San Diego’s most well-known and respected venues. The program prepares students to speak to an audience, develop a set list, and work collaboratively with the members of their ensemble.

Each Wednesday one YLJC ensemble plays at The Young Lions Series at Panama 66 in Balboa Park (all ensembles are given the opportunity to perform here). Select ensembles will open for San Diego Symphony's Jazz @ The Jacobs series at Copley Symphony Hall, and a few concerts at Bayside Summer Nights at Embarcadero Marina Park, as well as other special events. In addition, there are two recitals per year in which all ensembles play.

See our calender for all dates.

Do You Offer Adult Classes?

Yes we do! Adult Classes

Do You Offer Private Instruction?

Private instruction is not part of our current programming but our instructors are some of the best in the area and offer private lessons. We also have a wide repertoire of musicians all over the county who offer private instruction on most instruments - just ask!

Do You Have A Summer Camp?

In 2020, we launched our first summer program. If you'd like more information, please click here.

Do You Take Younger Students?

Yes!  Although our guidelines say “between the ages of 10-18," if a student is able to meet the requirements, they will be accepted into the program and placed accordingly.
